Abstract
Metaessays (メタエッセイ) gathers texts written by a narrating entity who, after inadvertently receiving a package with Yukie Hori’s materials, embarks on a reflective journey about the Brazilian-Japanese artist’s creative universe.
Through detours, mishaps, and shortcuts, the texts aim at indicating, understanding, and articulating concepts, procedures, and references in Yukie's artistic practice without losing sight of the bond between artwork and audience and how that interaction is affected by time, space, and social relations.
The works and keywords guide the paths of this literary miscellanea. However, as a journey that refuses a pre-assigned destination, other trails are experienced, such as the pandemic experienced in 2020 and consideration about the writing itself.
By establishing a dialogue between observer and observed, present and past, this book intends to put into practice the essay form and its porous relationships between fictional and documental, inner world and outer reality, thought and expression, theory and practice and – between writing and reading –, words and images.
Therefore, this book is developed as a work of art in which the crafts of the artist and the essayist are intertwined by the notion that the essay form is a method extendable to the Visual Arts.
